I'm surprised it took AA this long to add that route.

It's a re-start. For some reason they axed it a few years ago.

Let's hope they'll upgauge BHM-MIA and try to steal some business from DL for Mercedes, Porsche, Diehl Aerospace, etc. For that matter, they could do the same for MOB as well to support Airbus. Currently both cities are ERJ-145 service only. It's better than driving or a CRJ2 but CR7/9 or ER175 would make it a lot more attractive.
CO777ER (Database Editor & Founding Member) 16 Oct 14, 22:53Post

I'm going to guess B763 unless they steal one of US's A330's for the route.

Typical UA, abandon SEA where there is real competition, and retreat to a fortress hub.

Ryanair started their new HAM-LIS route today, marking their first ever revenue flight to / from HAM. They will also fly HAM-OPO (Porto), starting on Tuesday.

Interestingly enough, their inaugural flight did not receive a water cannon salute today. Wouldn't be surprised if EZY (who recently upgraded HAM to focus city status, established a base here and introduced a ton of new routes) asked the airport to not give FR any unnecessary promotion. {scratch}

In other news, Air Berlin will launch flights from Stuttgart, Vienna and possibly Hamburg to Abu Dhabi early in 2015.

They will fly A320 on these routes, that will receive a new cabin with a full business class. The routes are hub feeder traffic for their shareholder Etihad, who do not have own slots for these routes. Germany's antitrust authorities are thus reported to have AB's new route plans under review.

Delta started their new Los Angeles to London Heathrow flight on Sunday. If anyone doubted the importance of London within the overall North Atlantic O&D market (remember London is primarily a spoke for Delta rather than an onward hub like AMS and SLC), with the addition of LAX and from next year EWR, DL will be flying from eight points in the US to LHR (ATL, BOS, DTW, EWR, JFK, LAX, MSP, SEA). Add in full codeshares with Virgin Atlantic (following their 49% purchase) and you can add another five points (IAD, LAS, MIA, ORD and SFO).

Despite my somewhat poor experiences with them {grumpy}, to be going from being a relatively niche carrier on the US-London route to being such a major player now is some performance in a relatively short time (post Open Skies). They still don’t have anywhere near the level of seats and frequencies that BA (especially when combined with AA) has, but I’d be interested just what proportion of their whole North Atlantic network London accounts for now.
