EAST COUNTY — Two pilots were killed when a Marine AH-1W Super Cobra helicopter crashed near Kitchen Creek Road, north of Interstate 8, in the Cleveland National Forest, authorities said Wednesday morning.

The chopper, from the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing based at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, went down about 11:54 p.m. Tuesday night, according to military officials.

The crash also sparked a two-acre fire that was still burning Wednesday morning, said Brian Rhodes, a U.S. Forest Service batallion chief.

The chopper, which crashed near a campground in the Cleveland National Forest, was carrying live ordnance, Pina said.

Marine officials have not released the identity of the pilots, who were assigned to the Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 166
